He then chaired the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1985-1998), where he remains as Professor. His research has primarily involved Clinical Epidemiologic studies to identify determinants of cardiovascular events in successfully treated participants in a Worksite Hypertension Program he initiated in 1973. He has largely focused on the relation of the renin angiotensin system and sodium intake to cardiovascular health. Dr. Alderman is a past President of the American Society of Hypertension (1996-8) and the International Society of Hypertension (2004-6). Editor 3 C.T. Stier, Jr., PhD
Dr. Stier is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1978. He received his postdoctoral training in kidney micropuncture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the mentorship of Carl Gottschalk, MD, and William Arendshorst, PhD. Dr. Stier's research activities have been supported by grants from the NIH, the American Heart Association, and the pharmaceutical industry. He has published over 60 papers on various vascular and renal mechanisms relevant to the control of blood pressure in normotensive and hypertensive settings. Dr. Stier has gained international recognition for establishing that pharmacological interventions that interfere with the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system protect against development of end organ damage in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats, via a mechanism that does not depend on lowering blood pressure. Dr. Stier is a Fellow of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association and a member of many scientific organizations. Dr. Stier also has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Hypertension and currently is a member of the Editorial Board of Cardiovascular Drug Reviews.
