    • TRPCs, GPCRs and the Bayliss effect

Recent work demonstrates that stretch-induced activation of cation channels in vascular smooth muscle originates from a fascinating interplay between the TRPC6 cation channel and the angiotensin receptor.

    • One for all? A viral protein supplants the mRNA cap binding complex

New research shows that the nucleocapsid protein from hantavirus can replace several host cell translation factors in vitro translation reactions, suggesting that hantaviruses have evolved a novel strategy for modulating host cell translation.

    • Crystal structure of plant light-harvesting complex shows the active, energy-transmitting state

Under high light conditions, plants use non-photochemical quenching to dissipate excess excitation energy as heat. According to a widely-held view, this may involve a conformational change within light harvesting complex II. However, new structural data from Werner K¨hlbrandt and coworkers now challenge this model by excluding the possibility of such conformational changes as part of the quenching mechanism.
