Transparent editorial process: Inaugural examples are now online! Please see the supplementary material section of Abe et al; Pfalz et al; Blankschien et al; Desnoyers et al; Hu et al; Tjeertes et al; for their Review Process Files containing referee reports and author responses.
You will also still find our statistics on all manuscripts handled in 2007, as well as the results of a follow-up analysis on manuscripts rejected in 2006, and an Editorial explaining our new policies.
We encourage appropriate citing of primary literature through allowing unlimited references!

When separation means death: killing through the mitochondria, but starting from the endoplasmic reticulum
Proapoptotic proteins of the BCL-2 family also exert housekeeping functions at the ER. An intriguing study in this issue of The EMBO Journal finds they can activate the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway even when restricted to the ER, overcoming the spatial restriction of cellular components by employing an unconventional signalling cascade.

ncRNA transcription makes its mark
Transcription of an overlapping non-coding RNA is a recently recognized strategy for regulating expression of a given target gene. A study in this issue of The EMBO Journal shows how the act of ncRNA transcription itself, rather than the product, can mediate such regulation, through the deposition of histone marks by elongating RNA polymerases.

Insights into complement convertase formation based on the structure of the factor B-cobra venom factor complex
Piet Gros' lab reports here the first crystal structure of the pro-convertase/cobra venom factor complex. By analogy, this reveals crucial insight into pro-convertase assembly and thereby extends our molecular understanding of complement system activation.
