Extended family The release of an aggregation pheromone causes various developmental stages of the fire bug Pyrrhocoris apterus (Linnaeus 1758) to crowd to conspicuous masses of up to several hundred individuals. Potential benefits of this behaviour include security from predation, social cohesion, maximum food utilization, and enhanced chances to mate. The picture was captured near Heidelberg, Germany with a Nikon D2X digital camera using a 60mm macro lens und processed with Adobe Photoshop. The photographer, Wolfgang Seifarth, is molecular biologist at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. His main research interests focus on the impact of endogenous retroviral elements (HERV) in the human genome, on marine biology, and closeup photography in nature.
