Abstract
Reducing your calorie intake makes you live longer — if you're a rat or a worm. Laura Spinney asks whether the same holds for humans — and if it does, whether the benefits could be put in a pill.
It may be just a dot in the Pacific Ocean, but the Japanese island of Okinawa has long held a fascination for researchers into ageing. Its inhabitants include an unusually high number of centenarians, and fewer of its people die from diseases of old age such as cancer and stroke.
