This series provides a forum for leaders in business and academia to share first-hand experiences and perspectives on the trends and forces shaping the biosciences enterprise informed by their respective vantage points. In so doing the series offers unique visibility into the diverse settings where biomedical professionals are engaging their skills and forming careers.

Career Advice and Interview with Dr. Martha A. Reitman 9 January 2007
  • Michael Alvarez conducts a brief interview with speaker, Dr. Martha A. Reitman. Dr. Reitman is the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs for CoGenesys Inc., President and CEO of Reitman Corp., and the Director of Translational Research Development at SUNY Research Foundation at Binghamton University.
  • Dr. Reitman discusses important factors to take into account when deciding on a career, including personal interests, individual strengths, and the demands of the current job market.
  • After answering a few questions from the audience, Dr. Reitman discusses skills that are useful for building a career. She also presents five "frameworks" for careers: academic, clinical practice, industry, government, and non-profit. She goes on to weigh the pros and cons of each framework.
  • Dr. Reitman continues her discussion of the five "frameworks" she began in the last chapter. She then explains the difference between venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.
  • Continuing on a topic first broached in Chapter One, Dr. Reitman stresses the importance of knowing yourself – strengths, weakness, goals – before deciding upon a career.
  • Dr. Reitman responds to audience questions about finding a mentor, informational interviews, network building, and how to pick your first job.
  • The audience continues to question Dr. Reitman on subjects such as networking opportunities and the business of consulting.
