Atmospheric physics: Heating up the heavens
Battling rumours of death beams and mind control, an ionosphere research facility in Alaska finally brings science to the fore. Sharon Weinberger reports.
It's a Strangelovian scenario that only the Pentagon could dream up: North Korea, in the throes of a military coup, launches a nuclear weapon that explodes 120 kilometres above the Earth. The blast fills the atmosphere with 'killer' electrons that would within days knock out the electronics of all satellites in low-Earth orbit.

Man, dump a few MW of RF into the ionosphere (check out the 2005 PRL) and see what happens! With congress pulling funding for ITER, it's good to see some money going into novel plasma research.
The national security of this country and of world civilization would be better served if the Department of Defense (DOD) moved past scientific problems of the Cold War era and stopped pouring funds into a "data-starved area" where "theory is ahead of actual observations.â DOD should instead spend funds to study more recent, unexpected observations. For example, DOD might direct research funds to projects that would confirm or to deny published reports that a.) A large fraction of the nuclear energy in ordinary nuclei arises from repulsive interactions between neutrons, and b.) Repulsive interactions between neutrons in the solar core generate solar energy, solar neutrinos, and solar-wind hydrogen ["Neutron repulsion confirmed as energy source", J. Fusion Energy 20 (2003) pages 197-201]. Understanding the driving force that sustains life on planet Earth and controls its climate would be a wise use of DOD funds. - Oliver K. Manuel
Thank you, Sharon Weinberger, for a piece of excellent propaganda. In fact, HAARP's primary purpose *is* and *always has been* mind control, and it has been quite successful at subduing large swaths of major urban centers as well as taking direct control over individuals. To fall for a new line every three or four years about what HAARP is intended to do is total baloney. Either Ms. Weinberger and the folks of Nature.com are on the take, or they are totally unaware of the relationship between the electromagnetic nature of the human animal. Either way, I'm disgusted.
correction - relationship between electromagnetic fields and the human animal.
For a discussion on the health effects of microwaves check out Robert Becker's "Body Electric." Paranoid Mystic is probably not to far off from the truth. Mind control- is probably not the goal, but the potential for causing illness, migraines, depression, increased cancer- as well as contributing to global climate change is very high from a device like this. Research exists to prove the dangers of using high intensity microwaves such as this. This device is probably a throw back to the cold war in response to a similar device the Russians have been "experimenting" with by focusing MVR into Oregon.
This is a piece that gives short mention of Tesla.( The ionized part of the atmosphere has long captivated researchers, going back to the days of Nikola Tesla,) They make it sound like there where other people out there actually doing things with the ionosphere. But the idea involved here, which is the broadcast and reception of electromagnetic energy, as they demonstrate by creating the âFirst artificial Auroraâ (transmission of power) is what is at stake. Tesla first created an Aurora in Colorado in 1900 and showed that he could send electrical energy around the world, and receive it back again at 99% efficiency. Today, leakage of electricity from our power grid is said to account for 33-60% loss of power inputted. A revamp of all of our electric grid would be expensive and time consuming, but still be worth it in terms of the savings in power lost. Teslaâs wireless system might be a heck of a lot cheaper and easier (newer technology) to do at this point, and combined with the ability to pull on the 200-300 billion volt electrical potential between the earth and the ionosphere, would provide something on the order of 4 times the electrical power needed by the world right now. And in the end that power is free for all intents and purposes, but if you owned the facilities that collected and transmitted it, collecting a fee should be no problem as J Pierpont Morgan was to short sighted to see when he cut Teslaâs funding for Wardenclyffe Give everyone free power, then tell them to pay up or you shut it off! And Morgan thought he was a powerful man, but he turned his back on being ultimately the most powerful man ever, because he couldnât see past a billing process. Regardless, Tesla also postulates, and offered for years his research into death rays, as described here, back in the 30âs Well in the end all that is electrical and electromagnetic will be traced back to Tesla and his ideas, and patents. Even though he may never get the credit he deserves, Tesla, after Newton, should go down as the one of the two greatest minds to influence mankind in the last 500 years since the Renaissance. Milton for giving us the Calculus at the least, and Tesla for being able to use it and harness electricity and the polyphase systems that took us from horses to horsepower, transforming electricity into mechanical work, and freeing us to take the time to talk about these things by communicating through the very wires, or wirelessesâ that he created over 100 years ago. Magnifying Transmitters; Wireless Power Radio Multiphase AC power Wireless remote control Disk-Turbine Rotary Engine Spark-Gap Oscillator Tesla Coil Superconductivity Electrotherapy Earth resonance X-Rays and X-Ray imaging (not Roentgen!) Teslaâs own words No matter what we attempt to do, no matter to what fields we turn our efforts, we are dependent on power. We have to evolve means of obtaining energy from stores which are forever inexhaustible, to perfect methods which do not imply consumption and waste of any material whatever. If we use fuel to get our power, we are living on our capital and exhausting it rapidly. This method is barbarous and wantonly wasteful and will have to be stopped in the interest of coming generations My thanks to Frank Germano who supplied the above inventions list, and Tesla quote from http://www.frank.germano.com/nikolatesla.htm which I recommend as a good primer on Tesla and some other very interesting ideas.
