Planetary science: The hole at the bottom of the Moon

A giant crater on the lunar farside holds the key to a catastrophic bombardment that reshaped the Moon, Earth and other planets. Eric Hand reports.

Dhofar 961 wasn't like the other Moon rocks. Looking at its freshly cut face, geochemist Randy Korotev noticed immediately how dark it was — almost purple — and that it contained big metallic grains.
