| The innate immune response not only provides a first line of defense against invading microbes but also instructs the adaptive immune response. Although papers that document this intimate relationship can be traced back to the early twentieth century, it was not until the recent discovery of Toll-like receptors that the influence of the innate immune response on adaptive immunity was truly appreciated. With the help from many experts in diverse fields of immunology, we have assembled an annotated list of classic papers that document the close relationship shared between the innate and adaptive immune systems. We gratefully acknowledge the following individuals for their help in selecting these landmark papers: Ruslan Medzhitov, Michael Carroll, David Schwartz, David Raulet, Richard Dutton, Stefan Kaufmann, Richard Flavell, Siamon Gordon, Stephen Galli, Mindy Tsai, Susumu Nakae, Koichi Kobayashi and Michael Zasloff. |
