Multipotent hematopoietic stem cells give rise to multiple lymphocyte lineages. Commitment of progenitor cells to each lineage is driven by precise expression of specific transcription factors expressed in the cells. Studies indicate that many of these transcription factors continue to influence lymphocyte differentiation and function even after the point of lineage commitment. Some of these transcription factors also influence the development of more than one lymphocyte lineage. With help from experts in the field, we have compiled an annotated list of classic papers that describe the identification and function of these transcription factors. We gratefully acknowledge Cynthia Guidos, Freddy Radtke, Barbara Kee, Shimon Sakaguchi, Kathryn Calame, Steven Reiner, Casey Weaver, Steven Nutt and Thomas Graf for their help in choosing these landmark papers.
