Although it often acts as a transcriptional activator, the nuclear hormone receptor PPAR- also 'transrepresses' inflammatory responses mediated by the transcription factor NF-B. New data demonstrate that sumoylation of PPAR- leads to the retention of repressor complexes on promoters of inflammatory genes.
