Salim Karim has a rare problem: he has a large grant from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) that he doesn't want. In 2001 Karim, who leads Caprisa, a South Africa-based consortium of AIDS and TB researchers, applied for a grant to try to pin down how best to stagger treatments for tuberculosis and HIV in those infected with both.
