Abstract
Macrophages are phagocytes at the frontline of host immune defense against microbial pathogens. They are also the primary habitat of Mycobacterium tuberculosis: unlike bacteria that dependent on the avoidance of phagocytosis to survive, M. tuberculosis preferentially targets macrophage vacuoles.
