Gingival recession at a glance

It is measured as a distance from CEJ to gingival margin and is also used to determine the extent and severity of clinical attachment loss. It is common in populations with high oral hygiene standards as well as poor oral hygiene standards.2,3 In populations with high standards of oral hygiene, marginal tissue recession and loss of attachment are predominantly found in the buccal surface, often associated with a wedge-shaped defect in the cervical area.4 However, untreated periodontitis patients mainly suffer from soft tissue recession affecting all tooth surfaces. Individual teeth may be affected locally or the condition may be generalised affecting all quadrants.
